8 Steps to Turn Your Verbal Job Offer into a Formal Offer

Uncategorized May 27, 2019

So a verbal offer is not, is not an offer. Basically, you need to have something in writing to really understand what the offer is. What is it that I could accept? Because a verbal offer doesn't go into detail about the actual salary, the actual title of the role, the benefits. So, there is a job description for this role, right? And that is there, But then the ultimate offer letter will contain all of the details about everything that you would need to accept or to ask more questions about before you accept. So, the thing that Robert and I are working on now is moving from a verbal offer to a formal offer.

And so this, so the call -- the meeting yesterday, which was this like a two-hour long interview with the number two and then the message, that verbal offer came in that meeting. And so, the question is what's the next step? And so, the next steps we're going to take in this situation is to write, of course, write thank you letters and we're going to write thank you letters to the number two, the decision maker who made the verbal offer.

We're going to say, hey, we're really excited about the prospect of joining. "Prospect", which is not saying I accept the offer, the prospect of joining... We're going to talk about, uh, we're going to refer to the next step. So basically, you know, I will work with Robert to craft a more detailed email, but basically, it's... "Hey, this is great, I'm really excited. Let's go to the next steps in this process"... and leave that like that.

They have their next steps in the process. We all know and as professionals that always goes back to a formal offer letter. So what are the next steps in this process? Let them tell them you want to go, you want to continue on the next steps. In that email, you can say something about how you think you're a great fit for the role. You can mention something specific that you appreciated about the discussion with the interviewer and then refer to those next steps. That's the email, and then there's a thank you note that gets, you know and it doesn't have to be complex. "Dear so and so, thank you so much for meeting with me on XYZ date. I really enjoyed our discussion about ABC topic. I look forward to the next steps in this process, Robert."

And then, done. And then, you put the ball back in their court and then it's for them to come to the offer and then at that point you actually have something to compare potentially to. You actually have an offer and then you can ask questions about things that are not clear to you. Generally, when they give you an offer they'll get on the phone with you and also walk through it with you to see if you have any questions.

And so right now we're at a really exciting time in the job search process. We have some momentum and then we need to make sure that momentum, we need to make sure that momentum becomes the offer. And then it's a basis on which to make a decision. So, congratulations on getting that momentum and you know, moving forward, and we are excited about the next step. So good job.
